March 23, 2009 - 03-27 Seeing the Lights

Theatre and Dance Department Aglow with Rebates

Anyone who buys a six-pack of curlicue compact fluorescent light bulbs will be delighted to receive a $4.50 rebate (75 cents per bulb) from Albuquerque’s electricity supplier PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico). Indeed, PNM offers a variety of rebates to home and business customers in areas such as energy efficient lighting. Recent events at the University of New Mexico Department of Theater and Dance in the College of Fine Arts demonstrate the opportunity to use energy rebates on a grand scale.

March 22, 2009 - Words Afire Festival 2009/New American Plays Initiative

Announcing the New American Plays Initiative UNM’s Award Winning Dramatic Writing Program Partners with The Drama League of New York and the National Hispanic Cultural Center for The 9th Annual Words Afire Festival of New Plays April 24-May 3, 2009.

The Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce the debut of the New American Plays Initiative, a partnership with the prestigious Drama League of New York City.  Three innovative young Drama League directors shape the premieres and readings of our new plays during the 9th Annual Words Afire Festival, April 24 through May 3, 2009, in Rodey Theatre and The Experimental Theatre on UNM’s Main Campus, and the Wells Fargo Auditorium at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

March 10, 2009 - Impulse

Impulse a spectacular evening of dance, artistic directors, Vladimir Conde Reche and Eva Encinias-Sandoval, March 27-29, 2009 in UNM's South Arena Carlisle Performance Space.

Impulse, features eight pieces in various dance forms; from modern to hip-hop and flamenco, choreographed by the UNM dance students. The concert highlights the talents of the students in the dance program, and a variety in dance styles.

February 24, 2009 - Thou Art Villain and Tibetan Mountain Boat

The UNM Department of Theatre and Dance and SCRAP Productions present Thou Art Villain and Tibetan Mountain Boat: An Evening of Original One-Acts, directed by Amanda Machon and Rebecca Jo Griner.

This captivating evening of original works featuring Thou Art Villain, by Theodore Jackson and directed by Amanda Machon, and Tibetan Mountain Boat, by James Blessing and directed by Rebecca Griner will be performed in UNM's Experimental Theatre from March 5-15. Innovative and experimental, these student-written plays feature the full creative talent of some of the University's finest student playwrights, directors, and actors.

February 14, 2009 - Greek Row Tragedy

GREEK ROW TRAGEDY, An Adaptation of The Bacchae of Euripides by Mars Mráz, directed by Paul Ford, with original music by Mars Mráz, and choreography by Ashley Miller, in Rodey Theatre, March 5-14.  

The world premiere of a new work by award winning playwright Mars Mráz, Greek Row Tragedy, is a modern take on the Greek classic, set on a university campus with a chorus of sorority girls sweeping across the campus in a Dionysian frenzy. Singing, dancing and ritual sacrifice---an evening of entertainment fit for the gods! March 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 at 7:30pm and March 8 at 2pm, with a special post-performance panel discussion on Friday, March 6.

February 8, 2009 - Imprints

Imprints is an MFA Dissertation Concert featuring the choreography and dancing of graduatestudent Ashley Miller, student dancers from the UNM Dance Program, and children from the Albuquerque community, March 6-8, Carlisle Performance Space.

Choreographer and MFA graduate student Ashley Miller presents, Imprints, an evening of invigorating dance performance including six original works showcasing the riveting dance creations that explore and highlight Ms. Miller’s dance works at the University of New Mexico.  The concert includes six modern dance works performed by student dancers from the UNM Dance Program and young children from Albuquerque participating in Ms. Miller’s dissertation creative dance research project.  The concert also features a new work choreographed by Head of Dance, Donna Jewell, performed by Ashley Miller and Margaret West.

January 21, 2009 - Broadway Your Way!

The 2009 Spring Main Stage Production Series opens with Broadway Your Way! The Interactive Musical Theatre Revue, where audiences select from a mixed menu of musical theatre favorites to create a show that is sure to satisfy everyone’s taste! February 12-22 in the Experimental Theatre.

In Broadway Your Way! audiences are invited to participate by singing (if they want,) dancing (if they want,) and selecting their favorite songs from a mixed menu of musical theatre, to create a show that is sure to satisfy everyone’s taste.  To keep things eclectic, an ensemble of a dozen of UNM’s most talented actors have prepared a variety of show tunes----with selections ranging from West Side Story to Spring Awakening! Several times each show, the audience will be asked to vote, and the most popular choices make it into that evening’s performance, fashioning a different musical revue each evening. Each performance will be as unique and as different as the audience that creates it!  Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm.

November 7, 2008 - Rise Rhythm

RISE RHYTHM A Spectacular Evening of Dance Artistic Director Donna Jewell Comes to Rodey Theatre for Four Performances Only, November 21-23

Rise Rhythm, features six pieces in various styles; from modern to hip-hop to jazz and flamenco, choreographed by the UNM dance faculty. The concert highlights the talents of the students in the dance program, and introduces new faculty member, Vladimir Conde-Reche. Performances are November 21 and 22 at 7:30pm November 23 at 2pm and 6pm.

November 3, 2008 - Full Frontal Poetry

FULL FRONTAL POETRY A Provocative Evening of Original Work Directed by Paul Ford November 13-23, in UNM's Experimental Theatre

Beginning with the idea of confession, the performance examines the ideas of sin and redemption, innocence and cynicism. Looking both inward and outward, the cast finds power and inspiration considering "the seven deadly sins" as well as children's stories and nursery rhymes which deal with innocence and its loss. Innovative, powerful, and honest; Full Frontal Poetry features poetry, story, conceptual pieces to music and silence, satire, and personal "open-heart surgery” created by a brave ensemble of 13 actor/writers.

October 14, 2008 - Words Afire

Announcing the Words Afire Reading Series, an exciting "first look" at plays in development for the next Words Afire Festival with guest directors from the Drama League of New York, November 5-9, 2008.

The 2009 Words Afire Festival marks the start of a new direction for the festival and the UNM Dramatic Writing Program. For the first time in the history of the festival, UNM will collaborate with the Drama League, an association of emerging professional directors from New York City. Plays included in the series are The Big Come by Marz Mráz, Living Purgatory by Patricia Crespin, Profiles by Aaron Frale, I Write Death Like A Man by Beth Iha, The Rug Dealer by Riti Sachdeva, The Cupboard by Erin Phillips, and Deception Pass by Kamarie Chapman.

September 23, 2008 - Betty’s Summer Vacation

UNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance And SCRAP Productions Present Betty’s Summer Vacation. By Christopher Durang, Directed by Rani Copeland October 16-25 in the Experimental Theatre.

Betty’s Summer Vacation, is an examination of the human interest in voyeurism, following Betty through an hysterical, dark comedy, as she encounters sex, murder, court trials and a living laugh track, all while trying to survive her summer vacation.

September 19, 2008 - Coming Home

Announcing the Residency of Adrienne Clancy and her ClancyWorks Company and the Dance Concert Coming Home.

Adrienne Clancy and her ClancyWorks Company will be in residence from September 29th through October 4th. Her company will perform "Coming Home" in the South Arena on October 3rd and 4th at 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend. Cost of classes varies. Check accompanying schedule for more information.

September 7, 2008 - Frankenstein

Frankenstein, by R. N. Sandberg, directed by Kristen Loree,
opens the 2008-2009 main stage series,
in Rodey Theatre, October 3-11.

Based on the novel by Mary Shelley, this great gothic tale is set in the icy Polar Regions where scientist Victor Frankenstein has chased the creature he brought to life. In an intensely dramatic examination of the relationship between creation and creator, an outstanding artistic ensemble reveal Frankenstein's memories of his unnatural offspring and a surreal path towards death and destruction.
