Inside Look is an exciting concert of new works by the exceptional students in UNM’s prestigious dance program that continues the tradition of celebrating student choreographers each semester. Student choreographers are selected after a rigorous audition process, offering works that are innovative and inspiring in works that span many styles. This is the perfect event for every dance lover and a great way to enjoy the artistry, passion, and creativity of some of UNM’s up-and-coming dance creators, will be presented for only six performances, in Carlisle Performance Space, April 26-May 5, 2013.

April 19-28, 2013 Blithe Spirit

Till death do us part takes on an entirely new meaning as Noël Coward’s self-described “improbable farce” Blithe Spirit plays Rodey Theatre April 19-28.

With a cast of UNM’s finest actors, expertly led by prominent director Paul Ford, in a lavish production with scenic design by Emmy-award winner Dahl Delu, Blithe Spirit promises an evening of high style and sparkling humor in this delightful comic romp from the master of sophisticated wit. Cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine invites the eccentric spiritualist Madame Arcati to conduct a séance as research for his new novel. Wild complications ensue when she inadvertently summons the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, much to the chagrin of his current spouse, Ruth. First produced in 1941, Blithe Spirit remains one of Noël Coward’s most popular works.

The Festival features Fadeaway, by Zee Eskeets, Disposable Boys by Kevin R. Elder, and The Invasive Kind by Christina Hjelm, and closes with The Menu, by Prof. Jim Linnell.

The University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce the 13th Annual Words Afire! Festival of New Plays, running April 11 through 20, 2013, in The Experimental Theatre on UNM’s Main Campus. This year’s Words Afire! Festival features three world premieres, written by Zee Eskeets, Kevin Elder, and Christina Hjelm, the current graduating class in UNM’s award winning Graduate Program in Dramatic Writing. In addition, the festival closes with a celebration of the program’s founder Jim Linnell, as Tricklock Company brings his passionate and provocative book of poetry, The Menu, to the stage.  The festival provides audiences the opportunity to play a vital role in the continuing development of these exciting new voices, catching them as they step from their academic program towards the professional stage, supported by an outstanding team of directors, actors, designers, and technicians.

March 8 and 9, 2013-MFA Thesis Concert: OPHELIA, choreographed by Jacqueline M. Garcia and Heritage Journey, choreographed by Crystal Fullmer

In culmination of the MFA in Dance, Jacqueline M. Garcia and Crystal Fullmer present an MFA Thesis Concert featuring two extraordinary works.

In her piece, OPHELIA, Jacqueline M. Garcia has drawn inspiration from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, yet moves beyond the traditional text and into the hidden shadows of the mind through an evening of kinetically affective choreography and dance theatre. OPHELIA deals with the intense subject matter of madness, fragmentation of the mind and the self, and the secrets women keep hidden in the depths of their hearts; ultimately embracing the paradoxical presence of beauty amid sorrow and loss.

 

PanoramaHeritage Journey explores personal heritage and identity. Crystal Fullmer combines research and interviews to discover the influences of heritage and geography on personal growth, character, values, and the connection of the individual to the greater whole. The movement combines athleticism with musicality and a delicate sense of vulnerability to present this storytelling experience.

March 2-10, 2013- The Pillowman

The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, centers on a writer who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders.

Travel through space to another galaxy where danger lurks around every corner. Binky Rudich, boy inventor, has discovered something incredible, a two speed clock that can stop the Earth from spinning and warp its users through space and time. When it malfunctions and takes him and his friends Vivian Mooster and Bob the almost human sheep from Waukegan, Illinois to Crestview, fourth planet in the Goolagong system, it's up to Binky to bring everyone home. “David Mamet,” you might ask, “The playwright who wrote Glengarry Glen Ross and Sexual Perversity in Chicago?" Not to worry, parents, The Revenge of the Space Pandas is G-rated fun for the whole family!

February 22-March 3, 2013-ArtFacts: Faculty Dance Concert

Choreography By Internationally Acclaimed Guests And UNM Faculty

ArtFacts, comes to UNM’s Rodey Theatre for six performances only, February 22- March 3, 2013. This spectacular dance concert features choreography by internationally acclaimed guest artists Mercedes Amaya, Zoë Knights, and Robert Battle as well as three new works by UNM’s Donna Jewell and Vladimir Conde Reche. Erika Pujič, a founding member of Robert Battle’s original dance company will also perform one of his solo works. Expect the unexpected in ArtFacts, a concert of innovative, inspiring, exhilarating dance!

February 21-March 1, 2013- Revenge of the Space Pandas

Revenge of the Space Pandas, by David Mamet, directed by Kyle Bible is a creative children’s play about three kids and their adventure on another planet.

Kevin O’Boyle directs McDonagh’s provocative story about fairytales, murder, and the person you become after childhood. Taking place in an unnamed totalitarian state, The Pillowman opens with Katurian, suspected of killing several children, being interrogated by two officers of the state. The children are being murdered in the fashion of Katurian’s short stories, and Detectives Ariel and Tupolski are holding Katurian’s brother, Michael in an adjoining cell. The two brother's lives, and Katurian's writings, are at stake. Are they being framed? Are they lying to each other? Is there any escape?

January 6, 2013-Permanent Visiting Professor Line for Flamenco

The University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance announces the inaugural year of a permanent visiting professor line for its renowned flamenco dance emphasis program. The establishment of the visiting professorship will allow UNM students to train each semester with internationally acclaimed flamenco artists. Each semester, the visiting guest artists will teach special topics and workshops in flamenco dance, which are designed to enhance students’ depth of knowledge and range of skills. Some of these guest artists have a history of teaching and performing at the Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque, which has been hosted by the University for 25 years. The Department of Theatre and Dance hosted Mercedes Amaya and Carmen La Talegona this past fall and will host Concha Jareño in January and February.

November 9-18, 2012-Zastrozzi, the Master of Discipline

George F. Walker’s dark comedy Zastrozzi, the Master of Discipline is a naughty combination of seduction, swordplay and wickedly wild wit.

It is often said that revenge is sweet, but in Zastrozzi, the Master of Discipline, revenge is a naughty combination of seduction, swordplay and wickedly wild wit. Zastrozzi, an amoral and charismatic criminal mastermind and master swordfighter, cuts a swath of destruction throughout Europe, seeking revenge. Written by well-known Canadian playwright George F. Walker and directed by associate professor Bill Walters, Zastrozzi performances run November 9 thorough 18 in UNM’s Rodey Theatre.

October 19-28, 2012-Points in Space

Points in Space is a vibrant, eclectic compilation of original works by emerging undergraduate and graduate choreographers from the UNM Dance Program 

 

Panorama

Points in Space is an evening of dance choreographed by the very finest of UNM student choreographers, offering a wide variety of styles, and exploring a vast landscape of emotional and aesthetic content.  With mentoring and guidance from dance faculty throughout the student’s artistic process, the talent and vitality of the young choreographers in the dance program at UNM are highlighted in this concert. Points in Spacewill be presented for only six performances, in Carlisle Performance Space, October 19-21 and 26-28.

October 26-November 4, 2012-Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

SCRAP Productions and the UNM Department of Theatre and Dance present Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, in the Experimental Theatre.

The Department of Theatre and Dance and SCRAP Productions (the student led production company) present Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, October 26th to November 4th.  This re-imagination of Hamlet through the eyes ofRosencrantz and Guildenstern has become a classic, since its first production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1966. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern don’t know why they are here. They don’t know what they are doing. They don’t even know their own names. But they are summoned to find what ails their friend Hamlet.

October 5 and 6, 2012-A Family Affair

A Family Affair, the annual UNM Dance Alumni Concert, features UNM alumni choreographers and dancers in a fun-filled concert of Ballet, Jazz, Tap, African, Flamenco and Modern Dance, benefitting UNM dance scholarships.

Friends of Dance, a support organization that raises funds for scholarships for the Dance Program at the University of New Mexico, will be hosting its annual alumni concert with the Department of Theatre and Dance, homecoming weekend, October 5 and 6, 2012.Choreographed or danced by UNM Alumni, this concert’s choreographers include Wendy and Zane Barker, Nia Harris, Illeana Gomez, Noudjal, Nia Harris, Sarah Waff, Stefa Zawerucha, and others. All proceeds benefit dance scholarships at UNM.
